Laid back and unpretentious, St. James Place Tavern has become a staple of Pittsburgh’s historic South Side. We’ve quickly turned into a local college, neighborhood favorite, and a virtual melting pot of patrons with our wide selection of beer and liquor. We have some of the best bar food around: made to order, our cooks will meet any request, and the menu includes exotic foods from alligator to snapping turtle soup.
SJP is on the corner of 18th and Mary, where there has been a bar for as long as anyone can remember, circa 1870. The Baranowski family owned it when it was raided during prohibition. It served as a favorite for mill employees working all different shifts. To accommodate, they were open 22 hours per day.
The 2nd family to own the bar oversaw it when it known as Jack’s on 18th and Bar SouthSide.
On February 9th, 2005, SJP opened. We’re the third family to have owned the bar in over 80 years. Not a trendy, fake, hollow, “cookie cutter” bar (you know the ones), and not a corporate conglomerate, we’re family owned and operated, gaining more family members everyday through our patrons.
Stop on in to get a true taste of Pittsburgh’s South Side.
